Before Your Visit

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring the following to your first visit:

  • Valid ID (driver's license or passport)
  • Insurance card (if applicable)
  • Recent imaging reports (X-ray, MRI, CT if available)
  • List of current medications

We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing for examination and treatment. Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to complete necessary paperwork.

Do I need a doctor's referral to see a physical therapist?

Not necessarily. New York State allows patients to see a physical therapist directly (Direct Access). However, some insurance plans may require a physician's referral for coverage. We recommend checking with your insurance beforehand. If you already have a referral, please bring it to your appointment.

Treatment

How long does each treatment session last? How many sessions will I need?

Each treatment session typically lasts 30-60 minutes, depending on the treatment type. The number of sessions varies based on:

  • Condition type (acute or chronic)
  • Severity of symptoms
  • Individual recovery ability
  • Compliance with home exercises

Generally, acute injuries may require 2-6 weeks, while chronic conditions may take longer. After your initial evaluation, we'll provide an estimated treatment plan.

Is acupuncture painful?

Acupuncture needles are very thin (much thinner than injection needles). Most patients only feel a slight prick or a dull, achy sensation, which is a normal "de qi" response indicating the acupuncture is working.

Many patients feel relaxed during treatment and some even fall asleep. Our experienced acupuncturists will adjust treatment based on your tolerance to ensure your comfort. If you're particularly concerned, please discuss this with your practitioner before treatment.

What types of pain can you treat?

We treat various acute and chronic pain conditions, including:

  • Neck pain: Cervical spondylosis, stiff neck, neck-shoulder syndrome
  • Shoulder pain: Frozen shoulder, rotator cuff injuries, shoulder stiffness
  • Back pain: Herniated disc, muscle strain, sciatica
  • Knee pain: Arthritis, meniscus injuries, ligament injuries
  • Foot pain: Plantar fasciitis, heel pain, ankle sprains
  • Sports injuries: Sprains, strains, overuse injuries

Is physical therapy safe for seniors?

Yes, physical therapy is very safe for seniors and particularly beneficial. We develop safe, appropriate treatment plans based on each elderly patient's specific conditions (such as joint degeneration, balance ability, cardiopulmonary function).

Physical therapy can help seniors:

  • Improve joint mobility and flexibility
  • Strengthen muscles
  • Enhance balance and prevent falls
  • Relieve chronic pain
  • Improve daily activity capabilities

How soon after surgery can I start rehabilitation?

The timing depends on surgery type and your surgeon's recommendations:

  • Joint replacement: Usually 1-2 weeks post-surgery
  • Ligament reconstruction: Usually 2-4 weeks post-surgery
  • Fracture surgery: After initial bone healing, usually 4-6 weeks

Please bring your surgical report and doctor's recommendations for evaluation. We'll create a safe and effective rehabilitation plan based on your specific situation. Early rehabilitation intervention is crucial for functional recovery.

How long until I see results?

Results vary depending on the specific condition, duration, and individual factors. Generally:

  • Acute injuries: May see significant improvement in 2-4 weeks
  • Chronic conditions: May take 4-8 weeks or longer
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation: Several weeks to months depending on surgery type

We regularly assess your progress throughout treatment so you understand your recovery status. Following home exercise recommendations can accelerate your recovery.
